Trent Reznor has been a fan of the BitTorrent for quite some time and made a big splash today by actually uploading his music himself to the major BitTorrent sites. He also put it under Creative Commons which is really cool. I use this as a chance to do a little promotion for the Creative Commons. Every musician should at least understand the options out there for their music when it comes to copyright. People love forward thinking artists!

I love me some produce. The best way I think that anyone can stay healthy is to eat lots of fresh foods. I heard a commentator on NPR talk about only eating food that rots. Not rotten food, thats a whole different diet, but fresh foods with no preservatives. I recently also heard someone of the radio talking about the French and how they eat fatty foods, smoke, and drink and live way longer then out very own diet crazed country. Anyways, I think the best way to get fresh produce is in preplanned boxes. I found the one above for Denver but I know there is several similar options in Chicago.
There are a bunch of great things about boxes. Usually the companies that put them together tend to support organic and local items as much as possible. And when you support local you tend to get seasonal items as well. The produce tends to be fresher, the box service I belonged to in Chicago guaranteed picked in the last 24hrs. It is also less wasteful. Just think of all the produce that goes to waste at a normal grocery store. Farms can sell everything they grow and make sure all of it ends up in somebodies kitchen.
I will say that getting all of that produce means that you have to find time to cook again. If you can’t find time to cook, then you can’t find time to live. Let’s not forget how important food is to our happiness. As always, you are what you eat.

I just could not resist. I signed up for a car sharing program. I think that this idea is so cool. I know, I know, I already have a car so this is a little silly but I wanted to try it out and see how practical it could be to really not have a car. Owning a car is such an expensive thing but the cost are always in big lumps or hidden in lots of little expenses. Car sharing on the other hand puts the cost on the front and encourages you to drive less to save money. I signed up for a non-profit organization here in chicago called IGO. I am really excited to check it out.

I know, I am a musician so I am suppose to like Myspace. It is so easy to promote your bands and shows. The problem is that it is too easy. It has gotten out of hand with invitations from every band from around the world knocking on my door. Although I love the idea of being able to promote your music, I don’t see that going away with out Myspace and the way it is set up now it is way to easy to manipulate. Bands can market themselves but so can corporations and Pornbots (those hooched up pictures of girls that lead to porn. Myspace is slow and unorganized and on top of all that, it is owned by the king of evil media, Rubbert Murdoch.
With the new addition of third party applications to facebook it really opens the door for useability on this site. You can now send mail using your existing servers, upload your flickr pictures or your blog, which I am doing with this post from bloggger. I invision a future where we have online operating systems where all of your information is kept online and no matter what computer you are on, you will have all of your files, music, email, programs, etc. Facebook is the closest anybody is coming to this and I think it is really cool. So ditch that evil myspace account and come on over, the waters fine.

Dennis Polkow just wrote a really interesting article about the sad state of jazz venues in Chicago. The Jazz Showcase, the areas biggest jazz venue closed its doors at the end of last year after they were not able to renew their lease. Now the HotHouse, Chicago second largest venue that was beginging to pick up the slack with out the Showcase around is closed. Northwestern just canceled their jazz program at the end of the last school year. Jazz is no longer on the radio in chicago with WPEZ 91.5 cutting all of their jazz programing. What is going on? Won’t somebody step up to help this art form from dissolving in a city that arguably is the birth place on modern jazz: a company, a philanthropist, and government, a school, anyone? These are truly dark days for the first truly American art form. I hope for better days ahead.

I am not really sure how this works. It says it searches podcasts and lets you listen to the music from them but however it works it is a huge resource of music. Very cool. Also works really well on Iphone. Link

I have been listening to this Hip Hop album by Tim Fite. I think it has some really awesome stuff on it. You can get the entire thing here. The album is a huge tirade about our current american society and I think it is pretty on point. And as he speaks about the harm of commercialism he proves his point by recording this record on a small budget and giving it away. This is a really cool way to use the power of the internet. I would have never listened to this album if it was not free but now I would love to see him live or possibly buy a future album. Very cool.
